To encourage the adoption of smart new policies to combat climate change, The Hatcher Group supported the Georgetown Climate Center (GCC) with responsive and targeted communications counsel for The Transportation & Climate Initiative (TCI), a regional collaboration to reduce air pollution, create healthier communities, and accelerate investments in lower-carbon transportation. To help reach key stakeholders across multiple states in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, Hatcher assessed the communications landscape and provided messaging recommendations to effectively engage stakeholders in the region. Hatcher prepared clear and concise talking points, responses to questions, and drafted communications materials for a range of audiences. Priority audiences included environmental reporters at the state and national levels, nongovernmental organizations, and advocates with interest in climate policies, and constituents focused on environmental issues.

After meeting with stakeholders and holding a messaging session, Hatcher developed a message box to define the problem, solution, vision, and action to communicate about the policy. Hatcher provided messaging guidance, and an analysis of the communications landscape to effectively engage stakeholders. Our support included development of clear and concise talking points, proposed answers to questions, and materials for a range of audiences.
Throughout the contract, Hatcher provided communications guidance and support whenever necessary–proactively identifying opportunities to share. Hatcher continuously supported messaging and development and incorporated feedback from weekly meetings with key stakeholders and decision-makers.
Hatcher developed a brand guide and templates to create a visual identity around the climate policy that engages target audiences. The guide helped align colors, imagery, and graphics for all communication assets.
Using the brand guide, Hatcher created several different types of collateral to promote the climate policy: social media graphics, motion graphic video in English and Spanish with closed captioning, and policy one-pagers.
Hatcher monitored digital and print media to inform GCC on the narratives surrounding the policies and advised adaptive response strategies. We also provided GCC with daily summaries of media and social media conversations. Hatcher’s media engagement work led to coverage in numerous outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and National Public Radio (NPR).
