Derek Turner

Vice President

Derek Turner is a strategist with 20 years of experience working at the intersection of communications and innovation.  At The Hatcher Group, he supports clients working to advance community and opportunity through advocacy, marketing, and smart communications. 

Prior to joining The Hatcher Group, Derek served as the Chief of Engagement, Innovation and Operations for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), Maryland’s largest school district and one of the 20 largest school districts in the nation. He led the school system’s strategic communications and stakeholder outreach efforts; managed crisis response; acted as the primary spokesperson to the media; and served as a key advisor to the Superintendent and the Board of Education. During his tenure, Derek oversaw the redevelopment of the school system’s brand and website; enhanced multilingual engagement tactics; and oversaw the development of the system’s virtual learning academy.  

Before joining MCPS, Derek served as Communications Director for the Kapor Center and the National NAACP. In these national leadership roles, he developed and executed wide-reaching communications strategies around high-impact social and policy issues — from climate action and justice reform to civic engagement and workplace environment. His campaigns raised awareness, influenced public discourse, and helped drive meaningful change across sectors.

Derek holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Duke University, a juris doctor from Southwestern Law School, and studied film production at American University. He also earned a certificate in change management from Cornell University. A lifelong learner and storyteller, Derek has lived in nine states and the District of Columbia. He currently resides in Wheaton, Maryland, with his wife, daughter, and son — and is known among friends for his karaoke skills and passion for woodworking.
